Alexia 2024 Wairarapa Stormy Heart Grüner Veltliner
"Beautiful spirit in constant motion - you’re a walking weather system of sunshine and storms. Our love for you is gale force."
Taste: Lime, greengage plum, white florals, racy.
Grüner Veltliner is a grape variety originally from Austria, and while there’s not much made in New Zealand at present we’re delighted with the promise it is showing in Wairarapa.
This is our second Grüner from young vines, following a significant replanting programme at Manuka Flats Vineyard which began in 2020.
This year we made our Grüner in our 1600 litre concrete fermentation egg . The egg shape of this tank creates a little bit of convection to keep the wine gently moving. This allows the yeast lees and solids where all the flavour is to fully integrate with the wine rather than sinking to the bottom of the tank. This helps to create a delicious, textual style.
Our version of Grüner is a bone dry, weighty, citrus bomb.

Reviews
93 Points - Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews
“Bright, even, pale yellow. This has a gentle expression, with a floral veil overlying citrus, apple and a touch of herb. Medium-bodied, lime, lemongrass and green apple aromas adorned by lime blossom. A lightly chalky phenolic grip textured mouthfeel; taut acidity carries spice and floral nuance to a crisp, appetising closing. A lean, taut, youthful Gruner Veltliner with texture, tension and drive. Match with oyster and blue cod sashimi over the next 3 years.”
93 Points - Cam Douglas, Master Sommelier
“A very attractive bouquet with a class scent package of white fleshed fruits and citrus, a mix of mineral, dried herb and a touch of radish, white flowers and youthful power. All of these scents become flavours on the palate with a backbone of acidity and youthful texture from a touch of natural fruit tannin. A lovely example and smart choice alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. best drinking from 2024 through 2029.”
